Amritsar is a city in the northern state of Punjab in northwestern India. It is the second-largest city in Punjab and is a major center for commercial, cultural, and transport activities. The name of the city is inherited from a famous sacred tank, or pool called Amrita Saras (“ Pool of Nectar) that was excavated on orders from RamDas the founder of the city. A beautiful place of worship was built on an island in the pool which is approached by a marble causeway and is widely known as the Golden Temple.
